Style Watch – Mickey from Love

Ah, love. Who doesn’t need some love in their life? So who doesn’t need some Netflix Love in their life? The answer, nobody! Because Love – Judd Apatow’s new comedy – is bloody awesome. I have a big love – heart? – shaped hole in my life after binging on season one and two. Figurativing, that is. Gus is adorable. I want Bertie to be my best friend. And I’m very eager to find out if Witchita will be given the green light for another season. But most of all, I need more of Mickey’s outfit inspiration. Carhartt overalls anyone? Yes, ME please!

She rocks contemporary vintage like a pro. Baseball jackets, mini skirts with rocker boots and all those great t-shirts. Oh the t-shirt. The costume designer for the show describes Mickey’s style as “hungover Alexa Chung” which is a great description and an even better muse. There have been a few stand out moments for Mickey; the red swimsuit with jeans, the carhartt overalls – which are actress Gillian Jabob’ s own – the silver slip dress, the Modern Vice boots and the Yankees baseball jacket. Like any good wardrobe choices in a TV show or movie, I believe Mickey and what she wears. Her style adds so much to the overall character, authentic, like popular style choices today – I’ve got similar biker boots, a baseball jacket, an army jacket, overalls and many worn t-shirts! She’s cool without being try hard, you know she does like fashion, but is not a slave to it. In short, I Love her. Single white female anyone?

To get the look, hit up your local vintage stores and head to Modern Vice for some killer boots. If you haven’t watched the show yet, hurry up!

Beat the Windy Weather: Beanie Style

beanie-18

Its been a windy few days. And Doris is playing havoc with our wheelie bins and our hair. The answer – to your hair issues at least – is a trusty beanie hat. Not just for the painfully cool, twenty something year old hipster in a ‘rock band’ who insists on wearing his beanie indoors. In the summer. No, this small and simple garment is as stylish as it is practical. Take note.

Style Watch – Awards Season

golden-globes-8

Its that time of year. Again. Is it me or does it feel like the gap between award season hype is shortening every year? With this hype and the rush to the theatre to see ALL the Oscar nominated movies in a month – I have only seen La La Land, which is enough for me, I’m OBSESSED – comes the style watch. We watch in anticipation for the stars to come out in their finest and wow us while we are all wearing our flannel pj’s and warding off the post Christmas blues. So far. So so.

Like last year, nobody has taken our breath away. There have been some brilliant looks, yes, but the stars are playing it safe. They are going for pretty, not bold. Ladylike, not edgy. And you know what? That’s OK. I think we expect too much. The Golden Globes, The Baftas, they are not the Grammys. We expect some madness at the Oscars for the music industry – we can’t even breath after Beyonce’s Peter Dundas number – but why do we expect so much from the others? When, just like us, the women probably want to take these opportunities to look pretty, glamorous, classy and grown up. Crazy, edgy style has become common place. Street style is everyday. We can wear sequins before 6pm, sneakers to work, logo t-shirts to speak our mind, and fringing and feathers are not just for Saturday night. Quirky and cool is the everyday uniform, so, maybe, when there is a red carpet and everyone is watching, maybe they just want to look like the nicest version of themselves, without the bells and whistles.

While I am not comparing my life to Emma Stone (Ryan, call me!) the only experience I can compare awards season to is my wedding day. I love sequins – like, LOVE – I wear bright colours on a daily basis, I currently have an unhealthy affair with ruffles and fringing, and my friend Orla calls me Rock Chick. I was bombarded with comments like ‘I can’t wait to see your wedding dress, you’re going to be so cool’. But I wasn’t. I was me, yes. But I went for pretty. I went for classic. I channeled my inner Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe and went for Hollywood – BIG – hair and a traditional dress. Because I wanted to be pretty. I wanted to be grown up – I rarely dress like the 36 year old I am – I wanted to be timeless, and look back on those pictures of me walking down MY red carpet with my Dad and feel like a goddess. Knowing I will probably never look this glam again – or have a glam squad again! – and soak it up. While they do have glam squad on tap, maybe they just want to rock the red carpet and the stage receiving their awards looking like the accomplished, classy women they are.

Alessandro Michele and Gucci may have a lot more to answer for than soft, pretty ruffles and injecting pink into every aspect of our wardrobe. Maybe pretty is the new black?

The IT List – Things To Do This Weekend

It’s Friyay!! And we could not be more excited. Also exciting, the new Joanne Hynes black pom pom coat that I just bought this morning at the second drop from the Joanne HynesXDunnes Stores collection. The new collection went on sale this morning, and – unless you rush online right now! – I think many of the best bits were snapped up by the early birds in store. The second installment of Hynes’ collaboration with Dunnes did not disappoint. The black pom pom coat with a delicious gold lining was on my hit list, but there were plenty of pieces to suit all budgets and ages. Lots of cosy knits – again, with pom poms, you can never have too many in your life! – gold and glitter tops for the festive season, and a faux fur coat in nude and autumnal tones. If accessories is more your bag, the embellished collars are back, along with some amazing detailed headgear. Get to the Grafton Street or St Stephen’s Green store asap, or check out the collection here.

On a completely different note, we are calling on all the 80’s babies to come out to the Bernard Shaw this evening and meet your childhood idol – he must have been? – Don Conroy. Don was ‘the man’ on the Den when we were growing up and for many, including me, our first art teacher. The owls, all the lovely owls. He will be in the Shaw this evening at 7pm for a free gig – is that what you call an art class?! – as part of their 10th birthday celebrations. Have your sketch pads at the ready. Legend!

The weather is set to stay nicely crisp and sunny this weekend, so why not take a hike in the Dublin mountains and take advantage of the fab views before the weather turns to pot! Nothing like a bit of fresh air to get rid of your work woes.

If being outdoorsy is not your bag, you can also get rid of the work woes with brunch and bubbles – that’s my plan! This weekend I am checking out Platform 61 on South William Street. Dublin is not short of places to brunch, the decision is often a nightmare with so many great places – first world problems. Another fav is Coppinger Row, Balfes and 777 for a margarita fix.

If you’re putting on the fire and staying in, the choice of amazing TV shows to binge on in the cold weather is endless. My Dad keeps raving about the new(ish) HBO show, The Night Of. Set in ‘real’ New York and described as a fictitious Making a Murdered, the critics – and my Dad! – are loving this one. A 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is no mean feat. Plus is stars the wonderfully weird, John Turturro.

The IT List

weekend

It’s Friyay! And we are excited. A) It is sunny in Dublin B) A fab Topshop skirt that hasn’t fit in months tied up on me this morning. It’s the small things.

culture-night1

I will keep this short. Go and do something for Culture Night 2016, wherever you are in the country. There are tones of amazing free events on tonight.

tdf-banner

If in Dublin, go and see something for the Tiger Dublin Fringe. While Panti Bliss’ RIOT and Hot Brown Honey are getting a lot of attention, there are plenty of productions to suit all budgets and tastes, and nice to support the small guy/gal too.

wellfest

And if sweating, meditation or bending is more your bag, check out Wellfest in Herbert Park for a jam packed schedule of fitness classes, mediation, yoga, and mindfulness. Something for mind and body.

Have culture/fitness filled weekend, and feel extra smug on Monday.

New York Fashion Week Street Style Favourites

shoes

On a productivity scale of one to ten, ours has been at all time low this week due to the – several hundred – Instagram feeds, stories,  Snapchats, tweets (seriously, please don’t let anyone create anymore social media outlets we need to be on, I’m exhausted) we are following from some of the most influential and stylish people in fashion attending this week’s New York Fashion Week. It is a smorgasbord of amazing street style fashion and even more amazing shows and presentations – I’m looking at you JCrew and Dolpozo. The latter, a genius.

For the first time we get to feel like we are there with the frow bloggers and editors by watching – often seconds later – what they have just seen on the catwalk. It’s a thrill, and will do me until I finally blag my way into NYFW! You read it here, I will. #bucketlist

Here is a roundup of some of WEARIT/dublin’s favourite street style looks to so far.
